Wrapping up our 1st Race Season

DSC_5090-Edit.jpg

Wrapped our last race of the series and our 1st year of racing in the BUDU \ Singletrack Cycles Series this weekend. It has been fun watching my son progress and eye opening how much the folks running the BUDU series and several of the racers give back to the trails. It certainly was a nice surprise to hear the Race organizers giving a nice donation to the 360 Park after hosting a race there or receiving emails of upcoming trail work parties.  Overall it was a great experience and plan on returning again next year. I’ve not raced since the Indie Series years ago perhaps next year I’ll join in the fun.

Next year my son will be old enough to participate in the Washington Student League. There is so little racing for his age group that it would be great if the Washington Student League could arrange the schedule allowing racers to attend BUDU races too. The BUDU race schedule comes out in November and the Washington League came out this year in January. Basing it on this years schedule you could attend 3 of the BUDU races then there is a conflict for the rest of the series.

For the last race I captured a few photos of the start then waited at the finish line. I had thought it would be about 30 – 40 minutes based on previous races, this time around the course was reversed and many were out over an hour. My son and I both preferred the longer courses. At least it was not pouring down rain like our last race at Henry’s Ridge.

Most interesting sight  of the day was a dad carrying a stroller designed for paved sidewalks, they had started from the North end of the trail and working their way to the falls. The falls are worth the trek in, but I’d ditch the stroller and grab it on the way out.

Wrapping up several great months of riding

SageHills2

We’ve had a seriously busy few months focused on training rides with my son, races and then a few rides with friends mixed in. Here is a recap of the last few months in photos.

That is a quick recap in photos of what has occurred since February.

Dash Point – Race Report

Singletrack Cycles West Side Mountain Bike Series - Dash Point

Proud Papa moment….. My son who has been riding singletrack since the age of 3 expressed an interest in racing mountain bikes. Work schedule got in the way last race season, this year though we are making it happen. Now with one race behind him in his own words my son’s Race Report.

Singletrack Cycles West Side Mountain Bike Series – Dash Point – Race Report

DSC_2260a

Even though this is my first mountain bike race, I know for a fact I’m going to continue the series.  As for the picture, that is me. It might not look like it, but I was excited and not worrying about anything. I would have been worried using my first choice bike.  The bike, which has been used for training, has been ghost shifting and I would have been worried about that happening during a climb. Instead, I used a different bike, a green Kona Explosif. As for what I’m wearing, I’m dressed in a under armor shirt, bike shorts with waterproof pants on top, my jersey and winter gloves.  I would suggest racing because of two reasons: one because you get to make new friends and meet new people and two because it’s a lot of fun to race on well-made trails.

DSC_2296a

This is near the start of the race and I’m hot on the other kid’s tails but soon I am dropped because of traffic on the trail. I felt great because I was flying on the trail and keeping a steady pace and had primitive knowledge of the trail and where the worst of the technical stuff was. I never caught the names of those two kids but let’s call the one in front blue shirt and one in middle red shirt just so I don’t cause confusion. I learned that the blue shirt made first, the red shirt made third. As for me, I made fourth place but got a lot of encouragement on the trail. A helpful tip: if you’re going to race be sure to train before the series so you have a lot of strength, endurance and ALWAYS ride the trail/ track at least three times before race so you know what you’re going to be going through.

DSC_2305a

My legs started hurting near this point in time. I never go down easy so I started counting my pedals, every full turn is one, two, three, etc. Doing this helps to keep your mind relaxed and body loose so you aren’t as tense as a tree and have a clouded mind. Also stick to a water bottle because a camel back will weigh you down like I found out here. Tip #2: before the race check how much water you have and prior knowledge of your tools so if something happens you can fix it and be back before the trail misses you.

DSC_2355a

My dad and I only rode half of the trail system the day before so this was an unfamiliar area. Bridges are easy to handle, keep your head up and eyes at the end of the bridge. My legs weren’t burning but close to it. Obviously, I was out of shape because my dad has been working long hours so we don’t get out as often but now my dad and I ride Saturday or Sunday and my mom will soon be taking me with her to ride trails around our house. Tips #3: know your trail. You don’t want to be the one kid that doesn’t know what the trail is like or where some of the technical stuff is. Also keep listening for sounds of other riders and eyes open for the trail and animals. I didn’t encounter any animals except a bird and a chipmunk.

DSC_2358a

This was where a TOUGH climb was. Behind me there were people already on their second lap, even though you didn’t need to do the second lap. I never lost confidence or thought of not continuing because this was a great workout and it was just plain fun. This trail was more climbing then I bargained for so by the end of the day I was DEAD, seemed like I had no strength so I sat around and ate a Stinger waffle and waited for the medals to go out.

DSC_2361a

Don’t have much to say here, I was tired, didn’t know how far I was to the finish line and my water was leaking a little. I never thought I would be so tired but tomorrow I’m going to feel it for sure.

DSC_2364a

Here I was happy for some downhill even if it was a very small downhill because I was basically dead. But I kept going because it was fun just to be out and about seeing new people. Tip#4: always have faith in your abilities and do your best. You’re out enjoying the great outdoors and having fun with tons of new people.

DSC_2394a

In my mind, I was happy to be almost finished. I still had a little while to go and needed to keep pedaling. Never think you won’t make it to the finish line, I kept myself from thinking that by thinking of past rides. I knew I would make it and I am proud of myself for completing it.

DSC_2397a

The end! I finished with some speed and in my mind, a big smile on my face. I did it and had fun the entire way. The entire thing was amazing and a lot of fun just to be out on the trail and seeing new people. I will complete the series because it was a really good experience and I look forward to racing with all of the people in my division again. I hope to do better in the future though, now I know what to work on. Although I came in fourth place, I still had an amazing time seeing all the other racers and seeing what their strengths and weaknesses are. Glad to know that I’m not the only one with weak points.

Return to Night Rides

Got Singletrack! Night Rides Return

Back in 2008 I was traveling a great deal for work and could no longer lead or attend the weekly Tuesday @ Tolt night rides handing off the reins. A ride I had been leading since 2004, logging 50 Tuesday night rides a season throw in the Friday Riding Scared series my lights and I were getting a great workout. In place of these rides I was on an airliner heading to or from overseas or working late.

Heading into 2013 my schedule loosened up a bit and looking forward to finally getting in some weeknight rides and pushed to ride more often.

What I really enjoy about night rides are old trails that have gotten boring over the years, become new and exciting again at night. Your wild life encounters increase on night rides too, it is not uncommon to come across a large cat, bear, deer or many white mice. Where do these white mice coming from? Riding out at Tolt I see them all over the place is there some secret lab nearby that these mice escape from?

After a winter of riding trails in the dark the trails are less boring in the daylight for a bit. Everything looks different and not uncommon to find that you don’t recognize some of the landmarks in the daylight. Then the night riding season begins and you don’t recognize the landmarks at night.

In the past we would ride snow or typhoon no matter the weather we would be out there getting in some exercise. My ride no matter what attitude is less these days and not that interested in riding in really foul weather. Now if I look outside and see raining cats and dogs I’ll probably sit and spin on the Computrainer instead.

Time to read up on the latest trend for riding lights and pickup a backup set. My Niterider Moab light continues to work great, getting loaned out here and there a few times and used on a few rides through the Snoqulamie train tunnel on the John Wayne trail.

See everyone on the trails maybe even on a few night rides in the near future

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Got Singletrack 2012 Year End Wrap

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

I can’t believe how quickly this year has flown by and the amount of adventures we’ve had this year.

2012 had been a packed year of exploring new trails, repeats on familiar and revisited a few forgotten favorites. To wrap up the season after multiple trips to Oregon and crisscrossing Washington. Several of us wrapped up the summer with Erik’s Annual Mountain Bike trip held in Fruita, Colorado and wrapped up in Moab, Utah by riding The Whole Enchilada.

Got Singletrack 2012 Year End Wrap

For everyone I rode with this year thanks for all the great adventures and looking forward to many more in 2013.

Keep safe this holiday season and see everyone on the trails.

Before signing off here, if you have not been to Got Singletrack! for while the site is now mobile friendly and auto scales to smaller screens. The focus now is riding with friends and usually we have something on the calendar every Sunday with night rides returning in January.

In Search of Sun and Dry Trails

sagehills2012

Not really ready to be riding in wet conditions a group of us drove to Wenatchee, WA several weeks back in search of Sun and Dry trails. This would be our third trip to Sage Hills this season with the low temps and recent fire did not expect any snake encounters. The lower trails we would be riding had recently reopened after a fire ran through the area in September.

The area now looks very different compared to our trip in May.  Very interesting riding at every turn where you can see the trail acted as a fire break. One side is all burn and the other showing green or recovery already. The trail was no loose at all and a few hikers and fellow Mountain Bikers out on the trail.

Rolling down Homestead was a little weird without all the vegetation. The trail is still hard packed only a few areas were soft.

Here is a video that was taken by another group around the same time coming down Homestead.

IMG_2974

Looking forward to checking out the upper trails in the spring. For now that’s a wrap for 2012 dry riding now to start riding locally on the wet side.

Taking advantage of the extended summer at Orcas Island

Orcas_OCT_2012

Last year I just ran out of time to make an Orcas Trip happen, this year everything fell into place including great weather.

IMG_2833

I drove down after work and stayed in a local hotel to avoid that 2hr early morning drive up to make the ferry.

That worked out great I got up had some breakfast then leisurely made my way to the ferry terminal. At 6:30 in the morning there were already a number of cars in line. The ferry would not leave for another hour and walked around enjoying the morning sunrise. Eddie rolled up about a half hour later.

IMG_2834

Always enjoy the ferry ride to Orcas.

Arrived then drove to the Moran State Park where we met Brian then continued on to the Rangers cabins. Where we parked and would begin our ride.

IMG_2836

We would take the road up to Mount Constitution then ride the  trails down. Loaded up the Garmin with my previous course for this ride. The Garmin would displayed a pacer of my previous results on this route that I would be virtually competing with. That and trying to hang on with Brian and Eddie should push me up this climb.

The was some traffic on the road, but not too bad.

IMG_2838

About 2 or so miles into the climb you begin to have views to enjoy. Taking your mind off the climbing.

IMG_2840 Stitch

3 miles later from the last view point we reached the top and this big view

IMG_2857

There is a tower at the top you can climb up. Here is a view from one of the openings as I climbed the tower.

IMG_2884

After a short rest we hit the trail, stopping to take in the views along the way.

IMG_2886

Big Views!

IMG_2888

Looking down on Mountain Lake we would be riding by later today

IMG_2890

Trails were perfect up top and a little dusty once we got to the bottom.

IMG_2894

We kept a solid pace ran into some riders\hikers at the top. Once we cross the road and continued on we never saw soul again until the lake.

IMG_2919

The section rolling along the lake is fun as always and did not see a soul until we had to climb away from the lake.

IMG_2920

The trail ended and dumped us out to the road, rather then coast back to the Rangers Cabin. We searched for more singletrack and followed it for a bit working our way back to the Rangers cabins. Eventually arriving back to the truck. Great ride, perfect trail conditions and nearly had it to ourselves.

When we rolled back to the truck my virtual pacer was still a ways, guess we really pushed the pace. My legs were shot from the effort, loaded up said bye to Brian would be staying the weekend. Then hurried back to the ferry terminal. Only to find that the 3PM ferry does not run on Saturday, we would be waiting for the 5PM now.

WP_000983

Now that we had a lot of time to kill we walked up to a nearby INN for lunch. Great end to a Sunday.

Erik’s Annual Mountain Bike Trip 2012– The Whole Enchilada – Day 7

WHE_2012

The Whole Enchilada a ride I’ve been looking forward to for about a year.

It’s only the night before the fact we’ll be pedaling or walking next to our bikes at 11,156’ hits me. 35 Miles, 8000+/- Elevation Loss and around 2000 +/- gain. Do I have enough in my legs to do this ride and have fun….sure I do is what I tell myself. Take it easy and savor it all, yep that’s my plan.

WP_000942

The morning started cold and the WHE shuttle was a bit late leaving. A group from Germany were touring trails in Colorado for the last couple weeks. The battery was dead in their RV and delayed their arrival to the shuttle van. Once they arrived we were off. Great discussions with the group from Germany they rode WHE early in the week. This time they were going to ride Moon LIght Meadows.

The others in the van were locals and a few from Kansas would be riding WHE.

I started the GPS late, so the mileage is off by over a half mile. The elevation is correct and we were all feeling it.

IMG_2084

Success we made it to the top!

Others did the same

IMG_2087

Heading over the top the trails felt like Washington. Steep, lots of roots and rocks.

IMG_2091

About a 1/2 of the way down this section we started to catch up to riders. One group was stopped trying to come up with a field repair. They lost a bolt to one of suspension pivots and ended up using a multi tool and zip ties.

IMG_2616

Heading through sections of buff trail with large rocks, probably the fastest I’ve ever gone through sections like this. The Remedy ate it all up and I was having a blast.

IMG_2345

From this point our group started to stretch out Ken out 1st and heading to get the truck followed by Milt and then myself. Peggy went down by the river and waited for us.

For myself I still had energy to burn and wanted to see how quickly I could get to the Moab Campground. That is where we stayed on our last trip and recall just riding Porcupine Rim a little 15 mile ride that the spin back to Moab and the campground kicked my tail. This time was a different story I was in the big ring and flying down the road. Rolling into Moab still with energy left, but very thirsty and hungry. 10 minutes later I was in my truck with Milt, Ken and we drove back to the trail head to pickup Peggy.  Then back to the Condo to clean up and back into town for Dinner.

The Whole Enchilada – 38.16 miles, 8,390’ elevation loss and 2,166’ elevation gain. A big day and a great way to wrap up Erik’s Annual Mountain Bike Trip.
