Ketchum Idaho - Wolftone - Curran Gulch
Each year for the last 7 years a group of us head out state for a week of Mountain Biking. Where we go needs to offer enough trail variety that we can ride something different for five days with no repeats. 4 years ago several of us had gone to Sun Valley and returned this year for more great riding. We tried to not ride all the same trails as before and mix it up a bit. Wolftone - Curran Gulch loop was recommended as a good first day ride. Sunday morning eleven of us drove out to the trail head.
Proof that I don't completely count on my GPS alone out on the trail.
The trail starts out on a road climb not something I am a fan of, we ran into one washout that was still covered with many downed trees. That was also a few snow drifts kind of amazing when it was 93 degrees out. After a few miles it turned into singletrack and all was good again. The trail climb at stead grade and if your not hauling a bunch of camera gear and this wasn't your first ride for the week at 8000' it might have been a bit easier. After this trip the heavy camera gear stayed at the house.
Eventually the trail started heading up and offered great views. The trail also gets very lose with lots of loose rocks making it very tough going. Having to stop take a breather and look out at the great scenery wasn't all that bad though.
After more climbing the trail heads down into the trees with more climbing. This section was also a bit loose and improved once we broke out of the trees again.
A short stop for snacks and enjoy the view before heading down to Curran Gulch. The entrance to this section was very loose and in some spots powder like. No cover from the Sun's heat, but we were blessed with a nice breeze most of the ride.
The wild flower smells were fantastic something I've not encountered before. A bit more climbing then the trail heads down following the creek. No photos on these sections as everyone was having a great time. There was a bit of everything on the ride down and only know of one crash into the creek. A few more regroups along the way down before we popped out on to the road. While the views were great and the ride down a lot of fun, there is just too much road before and after on this trail to make it a repeat trail for me. I do recommend everyone do it once and check it out for yourself you won't be disappointed with the views, the challenge and fun flow down.
Fast Forward to 2012 – Thinking back on this ride today, yeah I’d ride it again.
