How does a person ...

Postby KevinA » Sun Feb 07, 2010 8:00 pm

Lost a brake pad from a set of hydraulic brakes while the front wheel is in the fork and you're riding? That happened to one in the group today out at ACFL. It happened after a crash, granted, but the wheel never came out of the dropouts. Any theories? Do I have to start carrying an extra set of hydraulic pads in the pack? For that matter, an extra set of mechanical pads?

Most brake pistons have a pin in the center that locks into the pad back plate. Also most pads lock into the caliper by a couple fingers that lock into a spring. My Hopes lock on by means of a pin with a keeper.

My thought without knowing what kind of brakes your talking about, is it had some problems to begin with.

For avids to just come out on their own, the pin would have to be broke off, and the spring clip would have to be very loose.

What kind of brakes do you have? were they working ok before hand?

This wasn't on my bike. Somone else on the ride had the problem. I can't remember what the brake system was other than being hydraulic. I have such a struggle just getting new pads in my mechanical Avid's that I find it hard to figure out how a brake pad could be lost while the wheel is in the fork dropouts.
